I'm raising money for The Burnt Chef Project, an organization set up to tackle mental health stigma in the hospitality industry. Restaurants have been my home since 15 years old when I served my first table. Grew up quick, fast and thrived in the organized chaos, perfect service. Swept my alcohol and drug use along with my ill mental health under the bar mat as I began each shift until it almost killed me. After hanging up my apron for a couple years so I could be of service to myself, in reflection of my past, realized there was a gap in the system. Where was the support? Rather it was enabled and normalized. It is time to change this.

Saturday 20th Jan
Every morning we say to ourselves, that was the last time. Groggy, hungover, barely remember coming home. The clock on the wall reads 1:44pm. Another day in the weeds. To soothe ourselves we stop by the pub on the way to work. Smash a quick double caeser and pint of lager in an attempt to shake it off. We are the ghost in the room, and sometimes the elephant. We compose a seamless night, making your celebration, anniversary, birthday, first date, secret date and all the occasions in between, go off without a hitch. We exceed expectations, we thrive in the chaos, we smile, we pretend, we put on a show for those watching. We are admired and we are praised, yet we are slowly dying of exhaustion. Exhausted from the battle, keeping the secrets and the shame. Being alone and addicted in an industry not to blame, but to simply ask. Can you help us, can’t you see, we have normalized it and resources are in need.
